Katie Receives Top Honor at Catholic Media Conference

It is with immense joy and gratitude that we announce that Katie Rutter, our founder and COO, has received the Cardinal John P. Foley Award from the Catholic Media Association! The award is one of the top honors given by the group and recognizes excellence and innovation in Catholic storytelling.

She was nominated for the award by John Feister, Communications Director at Glenmary Home Missioners. Here’s what John’s nomination said:

Katie brings passion and innovation to her work creating Catholic media through her Thing in a Pot Productions company. She created an 8-part, bilingual series of videos for Glenmary in 2022, with consummate skill at every step of helping to tell our story. An experienced Catholic journalist, she conducted or oversaw interviews at our Cincinnati, Ohio, headquarters, and onsite at parishes in Appalachian Tennessee and the coastal reaches of North Carolina.

As she wrote the scripts and worked through post-production, she worked sensitively and skillfully with a creative team to refine those scripts. She hired and directed a skillful production crew, working with them onsite as interviewer and director, or consulting with them along the way as our project unfolded on location over a few months’ time. She then led post-production of 4,000 files to make high-quality videos for web and social media, in English and Spanish. In the end there was enough content from her interviews for two additional videos, which she produced seamlessly.

She previously worked as a one-man-band producer at DeSales Media’s “New Evangelization Television” in Brooklyn where she created a video report daily for a grand total of nearly 500 videos and thousands of interviews. Over the years she also shot and produced Midwest-based videos for the U.S bishops’ Catholic News Service.

Her video work has been used on the web, and on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as for in-person presentations to groups. In 2018 she was honored by the CMA as the Video Producer of the Year and in 2021 her work was nominated for a Chicago/Midwest Regional Emmy.

Katie is also an accomplished journalist in print media. Her articles in St. Anthony Messenger range from historical profiles such as Korean War hero and possible saint Brother Marinus, social problems such as the opioid crisis, and Church themes such as a colorful exploration of Franciscan work today with war-shocked veterans.

She brings the best traits of a seasoned Catholic media professional to her work: critical thinking, sharp eye, truly the “eyes of faith,” to every project she skillfully executes. For all of this she would be a worthy recipient of the Cardinal John P. Foley Award.
